Local Historic district letter

Hi Neighbors                                                              Feb. 2021

The Wilshire Wood-Dellwood1 Neighborhood Association has begun a process to become a local historic neighborhood. The Neighborhood Association voted overwhelmingly to pursue this historic neighborhood designation last year. Wilshire Wood is already a National Historic district and this designation would make the historic designation recognized by the city of Austin.  Zoning permits and demolitions currently do not recognize the historic nature of our neighborhood. We believe this designation would give us more notice and sway in the permits that the city allows for our neighborhood.

The Neighborhood Association- www.wwd1.org - has begun the process of becoming a local historic district as designated by the city of Austin. In order to become a historic district over 50% of the neighbors need to agree.  Please read the attachment and prepare any questions you might have about this designation.

We understand that tightening the city’s scrutiny of projects in the neighborhood is not desirable.  The neighborhood association takes these concerns seriously and does not want to invite the city to increase barriers for valid projects.

Despite that we also know that Wilshire Wood – Dellwood1 is a special neighborhood and is under tremendous pressure to be torn down and replaced with larger more modern homes.  We see a designation such as this a way to provide the neighborhood a seat at the table.
